Local SEO is everything that helps your business appear when people nearby search for what you offer: "car service near me", "maths tuition in Vaishali Nagar", "best biryani in Jaipur". It's how a small business competes with bigger ones on Google, without paying for every visit.

You don't need to be an expert to do most of it. Here are ten practical steps, roughly in the order worth doing them.

1. Set up your Google Business Profile

For most local searches, the map results come first, and they come from Google Business Profile. Create and verify your profile, then fill in every section: category, hours, photos, services and description.

Our Google Business Profile guide walks through eligibility, setup, verification and reviews step by step.

2. Keep your name, address and phone number the same everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number should match exactly on your Business Profile, your website, your Instagram, your bills and every directory. If one listing shows an old number and another a different spelling of your name, both customers and Google lose confidence in which one is right.

Pick one version, write it down, and use it everywhere.

3. Have a website with a page for each main service

A website gives Google far more to understand than a profile alone. Give each main service its own page, so "root canal treatment" and "teeth whitening" each have a page that explains them properly, instead of one page that lists everything in a line.

Each page should answer what customers actually ask: what the service is, who it's for, what it costs or starts at, and how to book or ask.

4. Mention your area naturally

Say where you are and which areas you serve, in the places that matter: page titles, headings, your contact page and your footer. For example, "Bridal makeup in Malviya Nagar, Jaipur" is clear to both people and search engines.

Don't overdo it. Repeating your city in every sentence reads badly and doesn't help.

5. Make your website fast and easy on a phone

Most local searches happen on phones, often on the move. A website that loads slowly, needs zooming or hides the phone number loses visitors in seconds. Check your site on your own phone over mobile data: can you find your timings, location and contact button within a few seconds?

6. Put your address, map and timings on your website

Show your full address, your timings and a map on your contact page, and your key details in the footer of every page. Add a WhatsApp button and a phone link so a visitor can reach you in one tap. It helps customers, and it confirms to Google the same details your profile shows.

7. Collect reviews, and reply to them

Ask every satisfied customer for a Google review. Share the review link on WhatsApp after a visit, or put a QR code at your counter. Reply to every review, thank people for the good ones, and answer complaints calmly and briefly.

Never buy reviews, write them yourself or offer something in exchange for them. It breaks Google's rules and can cost you the profile.

8. List your business in trusted directories

List your business on the main directories your customers use, such as Justdial, IndiaMART or Sulekha, and on directories for your own trade or profession. Use exactly the same name, address and phone number as everywhere else (step 2).

A few accurate listings are worth far more than dozens of low-quality ones.

9. Get mentioned locally

Mentions and links from other local sources show Google that your business is real and known. Look for natural opportunities:

  • local news or community pages covering an event you ran
  • associations, markets or trade bodies you belong to
  • suppliers, partners or nearby businesses that recommend you
  • colleges, societies or events you sponsor

Never buy links. It's against Google's guidelines and can do more harm than good.

10. Measure, and check in every month

Two free tools show you what's working:

  • Google Search Console shows which searches bring people to your website, and flags problems with your pages.
  • Your Business Profile's performance section shows how many people found your profile, called you, asked for directions or opened your website.

Look at them once a month. Improve the pages that are close to showing up, and keep doing what's bringing calls.

What to avoid

  • a fake address or a virtual office to appear in another area
  • several profiles for the same business
  • keywords stuffed into your business name
  • copy-pasted pages for every nearby area, with only the place name changed
  • buying reviews or links

How long does it take?

Local SEO builds up over weeks and months, not days. Some steps, like a complete Business Profile and consistent details, can help quickly. Others, like reviews and local mentions, add up over time. The businesses that do well are usually the ones that keep at it.

Where your website fits in

Steps 3 to 6 depend on having a good website. A business website built for local customers can cover the basics: pages for your main services, your Google Maps location, a WhatsApp button, mobile-friendly design and basic on-page SEO, with page titles, descriptions and a sitemap set up for search engines. If you'd rather hand the work over, our local SEO service looks after your Google Business Profile, keeps your details the same on every listing and covers the local basics on your website.
